Day 22 - 6/26/10

Today Sidney and I went out swimming, which is great to do on these hot summer days in Orlando. It also is great for my exercising. That's basically all I've done today. Short update, but like I said, nothing too exciting is gonna happen everyday.

But that past 24 hours have been very exciting in regards to the blog! I am completely humbled by all the responses and words of encouragement, as I said in the last post. Thanks to each and every one of you! I may not be able to respond to every comment, message, or email I get, but know that I appreciate and read every single one!

Question of the day: What is your favorite way to cool off during the summer?

  2. Great Job Swimming! That's what we do here in Arizona during the summer, it's a great way to cool off and get some exercise in at the same time. Love your quest, I know you can do it! I'm looking forward to following you and experiencing the ride through you when that day comes. God Bless!

  3. Found you through an article on Yahoo that I can relate to all to well. See my daughter and I went to the Soft Opening on May 28th. The Forbidden Journey ride was not working that day but was by May 30th. I was exciting and nervous all at once - see I'm not a big rollercoaster fan but I was determined not to miss out on this one! Got all the way to the front, was nicely asked to 'try out' the sample seating. It clicked 4 times but I was told unfortunately it needed to click 6 times. The staff was sincerely sorry. I was left relieved and deeply disappointed as I watched my daughter get on with friends while I waited in the wings. I too came home with the goal of taking off my extra pounds, determined I would ride the Forbidden Journey by next summer! I am 5'4", 236 (was 241 but have lost 5 pounds already) and 48 years old (hmm, that puts me at twice your years..interesting). I will follow you, cheer you on and just know I'm traveling this road with you!

  4. When I lived in Arizona, I swam. Now I just desperately avoid humidity...
Freezer pops are probably winner, nowadays.

  6. I'm so excited for you, Banks! Losing weight is a difficult task, but it's great that you have a specific goal in mind, that helps a lot! You are truly inspiring a lot of people! Keep up the good work!

  7. Good luck with everything! Personally, I go to the pool, or if I can't, I'll just sit in front of a fan.

  8. I'm in east Texas! We drink the Southern wine to stay cool :Iced Tea! I don't have a pool, but have a hot tub! Too hot to swim in that! Good Luck!

  9. Swimming is an awesome workout!! and so fun, especially on these hot summer days. we enjoy our pool or since we are 15min from Siesta Key we do the beach allot over the summer! my daughter and I are working up to walk {or hopefully jog!} a 5k by the end of the summer so we do the mall allot when its super hot. Of course if we were in Orlando we would be doing the parks as well!;)

  10. WAY TO GO WITH YOUR GOAL!!! You are so inspiring!! I bet most big people who fail to get three clicks are just mad and complaining, but you're really taking the high road and improving your life, too. Wow, I'm so impressed. Keep it up!!

  11. Awesome inspirational story you have going on here, Mr. Lee. I see big things for you in the future. This is a great opportunity to really inspire a lot of people in this country to get healthier.
I was diagnosed with type II diabetes almost 2 years ago, and was hospitalized with a blood sugar count of almost 900!!! I was ALMOST as big as you were when you started this journey. The first thing I stopped doing was drinking soda, and did a LOT of walking, and in just a few short months, with just minimal excersize and severe changes in diets, I lost almost 80 pounds, and was off nearly all of my diabetes medication within a year. i think you will be pleasantly surprised with the difference not drinking soda will make in your weight loss.
I am following you now, and I cant wait to see how this turns out for you. Thanks for becoming an inspiration!!

Also, I live in Colorado, which is HOT HOT HOT in the summer, but thankfully not humid, so cooling off is a lot easier here, but usually done in a swimming pool, or local freshwater lake.

    Good luck Sir!!

  12. On behalf of my significant other, WINDOW SHOPPING!!! Lots of walking, no buying, and free mall air conditioning. Mr. Lee, I must say, I am so sick and tired of people whining and complaining that they are going to sue other people when something doesn't go their way. You are a shining example of someone who decided to take their fate into their own hands and do something positive about it. Best of luck!

  13. Good Luck in reaching your goal, it's amazing what your doing. You've set a goal and are working hard to accomplish it. Just remember that when you have a bad day, keep focused on your goal nad remind yourself of the reasons your doing this. It might be to get on a ride, but your also going to change your whole life by becoming healthy. I'm also working on losing some excess weight that I've been carrying around for years, and I know I can reach my goal too. I also swim to cool off as a lot of people do. Sometimes I stand in front of the freezer, but occasionally I cool off with a motorcycle ride!

  14. Hello Mr. Lee, I am so inspired. Two years ago I went on a ride at a theme park and I fit...barely. I didn't really think about it. I don't seem that big, until you put me in a chair for a crazy ride. Then last year I went to go on the same ride and it didn't fit, I got off so quickly because I was so embarassed, my friends didn't even know why I got off. This year, another friend asked me to go to the theme park again, I made up an excuse so I didn't have to go. I love going to parks, they are so much fun. And you have inspired me to try. Thank you.

  15. Again found you through Yahoo! Just wanted to say I applaud your POSITIVE approach to your situation. So many people in today's society would blame others and take no accountability for not being able to "get three clicks". I was cynical at first reading the story and thinking "oh great, another American sues" kind of story. I was pleasantly surprised!!!!
Can't wait until you get to your three clicks goal and see that huge smile. Bet you didn't think THIS was the journey you would take?
The kind of inspiration we can all learn from.

  16. BANKS!! So I am an Orlando native too with an Premier Pass. I go to IOA like every weekend.
Here is why I know you can do it and support your cause,
I went to a soft opening and had to go to a special place for people in wheel chairs, where a mammoth of a man forced the restraint as hard as he could on me. I could hardly breathe.
Jump to grand opening, when I could not get the restraint down and could not ride.
I gave up so much food, and got up to a good jogging distance.
Needless to say, today I got down to 4 clicks and was SO proud of myself!!
YOU CAN DO IT!!! I exercise regularly now..for the past 2 weeks anyhow. If you need work out partners let me know! I am in Winter Park!!

  17. May I say, way to go! As a former flight attendant who had to suffer through the embarrasment of telling passengers they would have to purchase additional seats, I am impressed by your ability to turn this situation into a positive. I'm now a lawyer and cringe over the "it's not me" society we now live in. I was expecting to read you had decided to file a lawsuit...but to learn you have set a goal that will likely benefit you more than any settlement, I'm just excited and humbled by your zeal!!!

  18. This is a great blog! I'm looking forward to your updates and can't wait to hear about your progress. You can do it!

  19. I think you are a WONDERFUL inspiration and I am taking this journey with you! I have been stuck in PJ's and sweats for 6.5 years, because I'm to fat to fit into anything! The 5 foot walk to the kitchen leaves me panting like a dog and its just not how I want to be anymore!
I started a week ago today and I am proud to report I have lost 9 pounds!! I live in FL too so I was wondering what is your secret to "beat the heat" this heatwave is so uncomfortable I can't force myself to walk outside and I am bored on the treadmill!
GOOD LUCK TO YOU AND GOD BLESS! I am really rooting for you!! You took something that could have been a negative but instead made it a positive! EVERYONE should have a friend like you! Oh! one last thing! Can you please weigh in at least every 2 weeks? I would feel better knowing what your losing and if you are hitting relatable walls!! Thanks so much for putting yourself out there!!

  22. Banks, You are an inspiration! My husband told me about your blog, and I had to find it. You will achieve your goal because you've taken that first crucial step...deciding to change. A good friend of mine has lost 70 pounds in the past year through diet and exercise, and she feels more powerful every day. You'll get there!

  23. yaaaay! let's go walking together! (in a virtual way - we're on kitty-corners of the continent) me and my little yellow dog Gypsy walk 2 or 3 times a day here in the Burnaby 'hood - I want to get my BMI back down a bit so I can fit in my jeans with a bit more dignity hahaha, we'll do it together!

  24. Hey do you know what the actual maximum inches your chest can be to get the three clicks and/or diddo for your tummy. I don't live close by and I don't want to make the trip until I can fit in, thanx!

  25. I don't know a thing about Harry Potter, and I hate roller coasters. But what you're doing is really something. Good luck, my friend. Everyone's rooting for you. Think of us while you're working that bench press.

  26. Good for you Banks! I hope many people are inspired by your story, and that you don't blame those who made the ride. Too often we hear people blaming others for their weight, or other issues they may have- I'm so glad that you've taken the high road.

To answer the question- Swimming pools of course! Especially in the Texas heat!

  27. Thanks for sharing your journey publicly on this blog. As many others have said it is inspiring and encouraging. I'll be traveling to Orlando in December and know I need to go on the same journey as you over the next 6 months to enable me to enjoy every aspect of the trip. Thanks for helping with my motivation.

  28. I love what you are doing. I'm in Honolulu but my parents are near Orlando. I look forward to returning for a visit in the next couple years.

In answer to today's question, I would love to say the beach. But honestly if its too hot, I like the movies or staying home w/ the a/c. Which is why, I have decided to follow you and start doing. I'm going to start walking, cutting back on my carbs and adding more raw veges. I like celery. I think it will make a great substitute for my love of sandwiches.

    Thanks for the inspiration!!

  29. This is an absolutely amazing way to look at it. Instead of complaining about the ride's weight limits, you're doing something good for yourself. You make plus sized people everywhere proud.

You're definitely serving as one of my biggest inspirations as I start my own weight loss journey. I really hope you hit your targets! Cant wait to see your journey and progress! Keep up the amazing work!

  30. Continue the fight, I was reading the news story on Yahoo, seeing such retardation of people complaining and blaming the rides for not fitting to the needs of heavier people when I was just shaking my head to think that why people can't see that as a message that they need to get into a healthier body weight since that would easily mean they're above the healthy zone in the BMI, then they spoke of someone who started a challenge because of it, and that made me happy to see, I'm proud that you as an individual are taking a stand and responsibility, use all your will power and make your goals come true!

I'm rooting for you man! If you succeed or continue beyond your goals, you truly will look back at yourself and be proud of what you accomplished.

  31. I love swimming! Cocoa Beach, the National Seashore, Jetty Park...all right in my back yard! And depending on my mood, an "umbrella drink" or lemonade...or just good old COLD water :)

Keep up the good work! Hubby and I went for a walk last night with our daughter in the stroller. She kicked her feet so much that I think she got as much of a workout as we did! She loves being outside :)

  32. I love how you're turning a negative experience into a positive one! Wish you all the best!

  34. You can add me to the list of people who came here specifically to tell you that I expected to read about a lot of whining in that Yahoo article and was so thrilled to read instead about someone who took it as a challenge to get healthy. As for your question - I live in Winter Park and, at 9 mos pregnant, the heat is killing me this year but the exercise is essential. I'm with you on the swimming, and the rest of the time I'm walking on the treadmill. I usually avoid the treadmill due to the boring factor, but right now I need the A/C and I'm toughing it out with good podcasts and bad TV.

  35. I live in the middle of Sumter National forest in SC on a small lake. So naturally, it's swimming, kayaking, fishing, etc. It's absolutely gorgeous living in the mountains. Naturally, there is a lot of wildlife to see, but the bears can be bothersome some times! LOL
    Keep up the good work!

  36. Banks,

Just read the article on you on yahoo.ca and thought I would be one of the hundreds to wish you luck on your journey. I always find that finding the motivation to meet your goals is always the hardest hurdle and you done that.

Good luck in the coming weeks, I know that you'll be riding it by the end of summer.

  37. I applaud your approach to this! I hope more people follow your lead. I have never really struggled with weight issues, but have always gained inspiration at the gym by those who have, and who have been successful.

Remember two things: Make this a lifestyle change, not a diet, and drink water, not soda (even diet).

Good luck, and keep it up!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I am so proud of you. It's so nice to see someone take responsibility for themself and not trying to blame the park. It is safety they have in mind. I wish you every success in your goals.

  39. My husband, son and I run through the sprinkler, have water pistol fights and shoot each other with the hose right on the front lawn. It really brings me back to my childhood when all we could afford was the sprinkler. There is definately something to be said for simpler times. It's a blast. The nieghbors think we're nuts, but they don't know what they're missing. I think they are jealous.

  40. I am also a "big" guy from Australia... I love Orlando - coming this October for my 6th visit... I fit on some rides, not others, so I too am on a mission, inspired by my own goals but also by yours... I definitely want to take that ride, but I also want to feel healthy and cram as many theme parks into my short trip as I possibly can :) You should take credit for going public on this, good move...

I think that you are smart. Instead of getting mad that you cannot fit in the seat you are taking it as a personal challenge to get on that ride. I love that! Recently my hubby has lost 35 lbs and counting in 10 weeks, with changing nothing but his eating habits... so yes it can be done! He is allowed to eat: 2 eggs, 1 serving of fish or chicken (not breaded) any amt of vegitables that he wants, 2 fruit servings a day, any amt of low fat smoothies, and always keeping the food seaseoned with lite salt. 80 oz of water a day and he can also have 1 cup black coffee, or 2 glasses unsweetened iced tea. Good luck and best wishes. Cheers!

  42. Hey read about your story on Yahoo. Pretty darn cool you are doing this. I am guessing I would not fit on the ride either. Good for you to turn a negative into a positive motivation. I will continue to check in on how things are going. Good luck and keep at it....

  43. Hi Banks,
Stumbled across your story from that yahoo article, too - I am so happy to see your decision to make a change. Like @Atlgirl214, I assumed a story like this would end in lawsuit, but there's nothing positive that would stem from that. I'm thrilled to hear your great attitude!

Best of luck in your lifestyle change. It's all about being reasonable. It's not a diet, it's the way you'll eat forever, so don't make it all about denying yourself foods you like. It's about real food over processed food-like substances, portion control and getting out and moving around. Rooting for you from Atlanta!

  44. Swimming is not only a great way to stay in shape but it is one of the best when it comes to taking care and putting low impact on your joins. I had knee sugery in december and would love to hit the pool(the sun has just shown its self here in Oregon) because my physcal theryphist told me that it would be great for me. I'm very happy that you have done this. Most people would be all talk and no do. But your doing. No only are you bettering your self as a person, but your health as well. I'm only 28 and I will most likely have to have knee sugery on my other knee as well. So I know your pain with being told they can't do things. You have my full support here in Oregon.

  45. Loved the mention in the Yahoo article and just had to check you out. I love your positive approach in taking the high road. I am 46, 190 lbs., and have been told to get my Type II diabetes under control NOW. It is very hard to break lifelong habits. You're taking charge as a young man and that's awesome. I am inspired by you. Count me in as a loyal supporter! Go, Banks!

  46. You are a very ADMIRABLE person! I almost wasn't going to read the article, figuring it was about someone going to sue the park for something that is THEIR own problem. I'm glad I did, because it was exciting to read how you TOOK RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR OWN ACTIONS, are an inspiration to so many ...... maybe this was your purpose in life, and you just discovered it! I'd like to lose 'only' 10 pounds, but the last ones are always the hardest to lose. I'm 57, and really want to "shape up and strengthen up" more that be at a certain number. But I'm going to start following your blog, and walk every day as you do. Big or small, you'll be an inspiration to many! Best of luck to you in your quest, and to all the others here who are on the same journey.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I have to say....you found something to give you the motivation to do what you're doing. Most people (ingnorant ones) would just balme the park saying it's discrimination, when they're just looking out for the safety of them and others. That's lke people suing McDonalds because their children and themselves are obese...STOP GOING THERE! I wish you all the best of luck in the world!!!

  48. I just got here through the Yahoo article, and I have to say: good on you! The best way to ensure that you actually see through a lifestyle transition like this is to have a goal. I think you can reach yours, and you know what? Your self-esteem is going to sky-rocket. I don't know how you feel about yourself now, but trust me; you're going to feel frickin' awesome about yourself as you get healthier and you're going to have a huge boost the day you get to go on your dream ride.

  49. Banks - you are doing a great job! I just wanted to touch base, it looks like you are having a great amount of responses on here. But you should make time for an ex-roommate! Shoot me a comment on my blog at www.alitjourney.wordpress.com so we can reconnect! Lindsey and I are on a Biggest Loser competition, and have had some great success so far (4 weeks in) so maybe we could compare notes?I'm interested to know how it is going down there. I am headed to Wild Waves here in Seattle!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Banks, you are THE MAN! Instead of suing the amusement park, you used the experience to set a goal of improved health for yourself! That attitude in itself is an inspiration. Although I am "only" ten pounds overweight myself, I know how hard it is to alter my lifestyle and stay the course in losing it. (I once weighed a lot more.)
By the way, I think that swimming is an excellent idea; it supports the joints against gravity -- which is a boon to all, not just the overweight -- and it massages the muscles as it exercises them. The "aquacise" classes are great, too.
God bless you, Banks, and keep your new habits for life!

  51. I think what you are doing is awesome. I am a huge Harry Potter fan and live quite a ways away. I plan on going down and thanks to you and your goals and what has been said about the ride and it restrictions I'm gonna set my own goal for when I do go down in April. Hopefully you reach your goal... Good Luck!!

  52. Firstly - way to go on your awesome quest! I will be cheering you on from afar. Gosh! I wish it were warm enough in summer where I live to want to "cool off" - right now I am wearing yoga pants and a long-sleeve thermal turtleneck to try and warm up! But if it were warm I would LOVE to swim outside - in a pool, the ocean, a creek...or maybe find a windy spot up high and stand with my arms outstretched, eyes closed and be at one with the world.

  53. My secret? Wet hair. I just jump in the shower and drench myself. I have long, thick hair, so it takes a couple of hours to dry completely. If I'm outside in the heat, my wet hair keeps me feeling nice and cool. :)

  56. I'm a big fan of swimming, especially for exercise. It's really meditative for me. I lose all sense of worry; actually every thought flees my mind while I do laps. Keep going man!
I like a nice cold shower and a tall glass of water to cool down. We just broke 100 degrees here in Sacramento, CA. It's completely dry too...next to nothing in humidity so it's pretty darn hot. Keep going! I'm excited to see you on that ride in the near future!

Swimming on hot summer days in FL...I miss it so much! This is my first real summer in VA, and our house doesn't have A/C (what a strange concept:p), no pool either, so we just sit here and sweat. :/ Frequent cold showers seem to be the best alternative right now. lol

    ReplyDelete
  59. The best way to cool down for me (and it gets over 100 degrees here a lot so I know what I am talking about) is a tall glass of iced tea and then a cool shower after getting nice and hot outside.

Keep up the work Banks. Over the 6 months that I have been working to get in shape to rid a ride out here in California it has been tough at times but I am so glad I did it any you will be too. The great thing about a journey like this and blogging about it is you can look back and see where you have been and really be proud of yourself. For me, finding and reading your blog is keeping me inspired to keep at it. Keep it up, you will be very glad you did!

  61. Hey Banks, when are you next going to try going on? Do you try regularly or have you set a specific date as a "test days"? I'm going in about a month myself, and have been dieting for the past three weeks, but I don't think I'll lose enough by then. Will be really disappointed, have been looking forward to it for a long time. Sad part is I'm only going to IOA for the Harry Potter area, and now I come to find out that the only new ride in the area is likely the one and only ride I cannot ride...

Keep it up and know you have many supporting your quest and following in your footsteps.

I love spending time hiking in the summer, but when it gets really hot up here in Chicago, I usually go indoor rock-climbing. It's fun, a great work-out, and there is a ton of support for new climbers.

  70. Found you on an article on Parcbench. Your attitude is so refreshing, and I'll be sure to cheer you on!

My favorite way to cool off depends on what I was doing before. At a parade it's snow-cones. Cold showers after my morning workout. Swimming when laying out. Of course, when the heat and humidity get too high (as they tend to do in the Miss. River valley) I go the lazy route and point the fan at myself while reading or playing video games indoors. :D

  71. Here in Texas, too hot to do much outside except swim. I love to play with my kids in the pool, but breaststroke is one of the biggest calorie burners out there, with no stress on the joints. Also like yoga shows on t.v., I can do what I'm able to without any pressure. You're such a great inspiration, can't wait to hear you made it on the ride! I know you will! Am planning to share your blog with my son, too; maybe you can inspire him where I have not. Thanks, Banks :-)

  72. “Get Cool this summer”

    By Tiffany Kelsey

Summer is usually hot (well at least here in Florida)…So what do most do to cool down? Two words- ICE CREAM. Now I know that you are on your way towards three clicks and riding the Potter ride and are trying to avoid this one cool treat, so we looked at this treat in sort of an out-of-the-box and healthy way. Below is a recipe to cool down this summer without jeopardizing what we have all worked so hard on- ourselves!

    Cool Down Cubes

    What you’ll need:
    2 ice cube trays
4 cups of 100% Pomegranate Juice
    1 pint of Raspberries

~Fill the ice cube trays with ½ juice and ½ fruit. You can get creative and use alternative flavors and fruits, but typically stick to a sweet juice and a tart fruit. Another option is Aloe Vera juice concentrates, thinly sliced cucumber and with chunks of honeydew, or try your own innovative combinations! Freeze overnight. When you’re ready to have a sweet treat that’s good for you too, just pop 4-6 cool down cubes into the blender or a glass of your favorite tea. This treat will be sure to satisfy that sweet tooth of your and cool you down!

  73. This blog is an inspiration. When I need to cool off in the summer, I go to the beach, or if I'm visiting my mom in the Las Vegas area, I spend a lot of time in her pool.
